There is nothing special about T-Mobile here Quote

T mobile messed up contracts.. and every carrier shutdown 2 yrs contract with less proce. many people r not upgrading phones right after 2yrs as they used to because of full price Without Apple's consent T Mobile can't do a jack. If you know anyone ask how Apple treats the resellers. They cannot discount or make changes on their own on any Apple Products and Apple allowed T Mobile contracts by lifting ATT exclusivity. At some point wants to introduce the own carrier services but backed. iPad 2 is the first device shipped with SIM and they didn't make it to final stages. Quote
