Rahul Dravid opens up on Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul criticism; urges people not to 'overreact'

Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have been at the center of stern criticism, amid the 'sexist, racist and misogynistic' comments made by them on Koffee with Karan. While the pair was ruled out of the ODI series against Australia as well as the whole of New Zealand tour, former Indian captain Rahul Dravid has asked the critics to 'not overreact'.

It's only provisional suspension with the full extent of punishment yet to be known as the ombudsman, appointed by the Supreme Court, continues to contemplate a final decision into the matter. The cricketers, hence, have already been out of on-field action for a period of 3 matches and it would be at least a series more before they could be seen donning the India colours again.

Dravid, who is presently the head coach of India U-19 and the India A teams, has asked those critical of the pair's comments to not take things too far as this isn't the first time mistakes have been made and it wouldn't be the last either.

“It is not that players did not make mistakes in the past. It is not that mistakes will not be made in the future despite our best efforts to educate the youth. But let us not overreact please,” Dravid told The Hindu on Monday.

The 46-year-old, who has been responsible for mentoring the youngsters in the Under-19 and the India A squads, highlighted the importance of having players understand their roles and responsibilities, and the role of the management in making them understand its value.

“Players come from different teams and their roles of responsibility need to be addressed. Issues will always be there and we have to educate and guide then. They should be told they can’t abuse the system. I learnt from watching seniors in Karnataka, from parents and coaches. They were my role models. No one sat me down and gave me a lecture. I observed and learnt. The best learning process happens in the dressing room from your seniors. But we should not over-react.

“People forget in the past also incidents have happened. Today it gets highlighted more but I agree we need to keep mentoring them, educating them because challenges today are different on and off the field. They have to remember their responsibilities as Indian cricketers. It can’t be everything was great earlier and everything is bad today.”

Former players Anil Kumble, Virender Sehwag, Mohinder Amarnath, V.V.S. Laxman and BCCI official Ratnakar Shetty also expressed their views on certain matters that need to be addressed by the board, with a report on the same published in the newspaper.

CoA chief Vinod Rai admitted to the need of grooming youngsters in the right manner before they get overawed with the limelight and attention that the sport offers.

“This has been my concern and, in fact recommendation, for youngsters in the game. I have already started the process for the same. We will start in the NCA (National Cricket Academy) with all players U-23 - all categories,” Rai said.

BCCI operations manager Saba Karim also commented on the importance of teaching youngsters the value of 'handling the media, understanding the laws and managing finances'.

Its obvious people overreacted.

but that's not the deal here. They are contracted players, and are part of bcci's brand.

Its the bcci brand that took a hit, and they reacted to it.

The least they should know what they did was a serious breach of contract.

They had no business giving interviews like that, taht are not okayed by the BCCI. pretty sure that's why they were suspended.

some anti feminists will use this to paint pc culture gone haywire. they are as usual bullshitters. hitting whatever they can find with the feminism hammer.
