After announcing that she was seeking a divorce from her husband, citing a "history of emotional abuse," Iowa Senator Joni Ernst told Bloomberg in an interview on Wednesday that she was raped in college by a partner who was physically and sexually abusive. Ernst told her ex-husband about the experience but has never spoken publicly about what happened.
