t has been two years since the Indian army commandos crossed the Line of Control to carry out surgical strikes in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The attack, which happened on the intervening night of September 28-29, killed 38 terrorists and dismantled various terror camps.

The strikes were carried out to avenge Pakistan's attack on Uri that killed 19 Indian Army Soldiers earlier in September 2016. India's announcement of the claimed raid on 29 September marked the first time that the government had publicly acknowledged its forces crossing the Line of Control.

The surgical strikes started around 12:30 am on the intervening night of September 28-29, 2016, and went on for about 4 hours. But planning such an attack wasn't easy for the army.

From using animal urine to airdropping commandos, here's a look back at 2016's surgical strikes that shocked many:

1. The strikes were carried out in Bhimber, Hotspring, Kel and Lipa sectors of Pakistan's side of LoC.

2. Indian commandos entered three kilometres across LOCt to carry out the surgical strikes.

3. The commandos were airdropped at LoC, from where they crossed over to the other side.

4. A total of seven launch pads were destroyed by the Indian Army.

5. Indian army killed 38 terrorists and 2 Pakistani soldiers during surgical strikes. However, India reported no casualties.

6. According to Lt General RR Nimbhorkar, who was heavily involved in the planning and executing the surgical strikes, Indian Army soldiers carried leopard urine with them to chase away the dogs. They carried it to ensure that dogs won't come near the troops while they were crossing villages.

7. The Indian government also released videos of the surgical strikes. The video was shot by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Thermal Imaging (TI) cameras used by the Indian Army. These videos showed how the destruction of bunkers and other military constructions were carried out by the Indian Army.

8. Shortly after India announced the surgical strikes, Pakistan denied that no surgical strikes occurred. In fact, Pakistan said that it was just a cross-border firing.

9. A few eyewitnesses living across LoC revealed that the bodies of those killed during clashes were loaded on trucks and taken away for secret burials. They also said that makeshift safe houses of the infiltrators were damaged by the Indian Army towards the end of the mission.
