Hyderabad: Hyderabad has progressed to the next level in prevention of open defecation with the Swachh Bharat Mission declaring the capital as an Open Defecation Free Plus Plus city, the first metro city in the country to be certified so.

The declaration came after Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) ensured that there was no open urination, besides initiating scientific treatment of faecal sludge through Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), among other measures. The Swachh Bharat Mission’s ODF ++ certification signifies the sanitation, cleanliness and provision of basic amenities in a city.

As per ODF norms, the ODF recertification happens every six months. Accordingly, GHMC has completed its field inspection for ODF++ certification on January 19 and 20.

“Across the country, very few cities have been declared ODF++ certified places and Hyderabad happens to be the first metro city to get the certification,” GHMC Commissioner M. Dana Kishore said here on Tuesday, after the Mission made the declaration on Monday.

Another challenge

Open urination is one among the several challenges faced by municipal corporations in all cities. Apart from provision of toilets, maintenance of the facilities is a key factor, as unclean and poor maintenance will defeat the very purpose of setting up the toilets.

As per ODF ++ norms, a civic body should focus on sanitation sustainability. Towards this initiative, GHMC has taken up a few measures, including construction of public toilets and scientific treatment of faecal sludge through STPs.

To begin with, GHMC constructed different categories of toilets like BOT (Built Operate Transfer), Prefabricated, Sulabh, Engineering and SHE toilets (e-toilets) across the city. These apart, the municipal corporation has made the managements of 259 fuel stations and 280 restaurants in the city to permit general public use the toilets on their premises for free.

Not confining itself to this, the municipal corporation is also working on setting up more public toilets and community toilets across the city, though availability of space is a constraint. Different modules are being worked out, Kishore said, adding that during the next six months, extensive public campaigns would be conducted to create awareness among general public on the adverse impact of open urination.
