I doubt body heat can be picked with precision at such a distance. nor were they trying to kill people. just buildings.

Exactly, that's why I said I am surprised that they wouldn't have use IR imaging. That would be the only proof to see if there was anyone there, unless there was cattle or something and they mistook that.
