Can Visting Visa be converted in to student Visa ?

On of my friends is Visting Newzeland for her cousins graduation on Visting Visa.. She told me this weird plan (I felt so when I first heard) how she's planning to do some course there & then then get an admission into college/get a job (she hasn't figured it out yet) which eventually helps her in converting visiting Visa into student/work Visa.. 

I have no knowledge of how this works.. whether it works or it's just her fantasy.. I guess these Visa rules would more or less be same in US or Newzeland or any foreign country.. 

Is there any scope for her ? What you think fellas ?

Dont think you can convert from Visit visa to Student Visa, they will ask you to go back to home country and apply

Most of the countries like, NZ/Aus US/UK visa rules will be more or less the same

50-50,  approve avthe you need to get stamping or just rentry might work!! in USA
