Most people in USA doesn’t know about YMCA’s but native European students mostly use this YMcA’s...They are pretty cheap although it’s not a hotel..with a student card or university card, it’s pretty cheap to stay in YMCA’s if it’s Europe...there are YMCA’s all across the europe

Check some blogs, look for British or French students or Australian students...they are really good at back packing trips..take their suggestions..

Italy could be the best place to start to start the Eastern European then central...Croat,Hungarian,...mist and should if you are architectural lover , Prague,Czech..beer is awesome an here..and then towards the North to Germany..
