kevinUsa Posted April 9, 2019 Report Posted April 9, 2019 A photo of guns with a caption that read “y’all should be scared @ Topeka High” caught the eyes of many on social media Sunday afternoon. Police said the Topeka High Student who sent out the photo was questioned, but an arrest was not made. Although officers determined there was no threat of violence to the school, Director of School Safety Chief Ron Brown still wanted students to feel well protected the next morning. “Our response is ensuring the protection of Topeka High was to have quite a few additional officers there this morning. A lot of times we do that out of an abundance of caution,” he said. Brown said, unfortunately, he sees similar incidents from time to time. “Sometimes it’s inadvertent or it’s just a kind of a flippant statement made by a student that’s overheard by someone else or maybe something on social media. We try to monitor social media pretty regularly,” he explained. He said no matter how big or small the threat they take each one seriously. “In this day and age, there’s no joking of these types of matters,” Brown added Brown said, while this situation was under control by officers and the school, he continues to talk with students to make these incidents become less common. “But we make it very clear in Topeka Public Schools that any potential threat is taken seriously out of an abundance of caution for protection of our children. We are going to do everything necessary to ensure their safety because we believe that you know a great school district is a safe school district,” he said. This case has been sent to the District Attorney’s Office for further investigations. The student’s current status at Topeka High is unknown at this time. Quote
