Journalist shot dead during riots in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland police confirmed the identity of a 29-year-old woman shot dead during riots in Derry/Londonderry as journalist Lyra McKee. Authorities are treating it as a “terrorist incident” and have launched a murder inquiry.

The New IRA is an amalgam of a series of armed groups opposed to the peace process. It claimed responsibility for a number of parcel bombs sent to London and Glasgow recently.

The New IRA has been linked to at least four murders since 2011, and recently been blamed for a car bomb outside a courthouse in Derry and mail bombs sent to addresses in London and Glasgow.

The threat posed to police in Northern Ireland is high.

Later, as senior police and civic leaders gathered to condemn the violence and say that it does not reflect the people of Derry, Deputy Chief Constable Stephen Martin addressed the perpetrators, saying: “This was not done to further any cause – this will have achieved nothing other than to plunge a family into grief and to condemn a city that we love into the worst possible headlines on Good Friday, 21 years to the day our peace agreement was signed."

He added: "I know that the callous and cruel murder that occurred on its streets last night will be condemned and the majority of people in this city will be heartbroken and repulsed. The actions will not have been carried out in their name."

He said members of the Real IRA and their supporters are "out of step they are with the wishes of the people of this city and this island - we all want to live in peace".

Mr Martin defended the raids that preceded the unrest and fatal shooting, saying he's convinced they were justified based on intelligence received.

Councillor John Boyle, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, said he had known Ms McKee since she was 16.
