A little after 1 am on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, Sahil shot himself in the forehead with the double barrel gun of his father, an ex-serviceman who was working with a private security agency in Hyderabad. The incident took place at their home in Neredmet which falls under the Rachakonda Commissionerate limits.

“On Monday, the results of IIT-JEE Mains were announced and it was found that Sahil did not qualify to write the IIT-Advanced entrance exam that is due on 27 May. He was admonished by his parents and he ended up taking the extreme step,” said Umamaheshwara Rao, DCP, Malkajgiri at Rachakonda Commissionerate.

11.47 lakh students write the IIT-Mains exam in January and April. Of these, 2 lakh qualify to write the IIT-Advanced exam. Around 10000 students get admission to the different IITs in the country after passing through the grueling set of exams.

Initially, vernacular media reports suggested that Meherdin, the father had shot the son in a fit of rage and frustration.

“We have verified that angle and established it beyond doubt that it is a case of suicide. But we will proceed against the father under the Arms Act for negligence in keeping his weapon in such a way that it was available for his son to use. We will also try to get his arms license cancelled,” said Rao.

The suicide is a pointer to the extreme pressure mounted on young boys and girls – from parents, from teachers and peers – to crack the extremely tough exams. Failure to do so often leads to depression, making many contemplate suicide. Taunts and comparisons with students who taste success also make many take the extreme step. The need for counselling and creating an atmosphere where the student realises inability to crack the IIT is not the end of the world, assumes great importance.

Unfortunately for the boy, his parents were not qualified enough in parenting. Wish there could be an exam to determine that.

Our generation has the worst parents in child education matters. They are the reason for such suicides in their hunger to satisfy their ego among their peers.

Please don’t force kids and don’t compare your kids with others it will damage their worthiness and leads to depression.
