Landfall on Friday Morning

The TWC met team forecasts that the cyclone Fani may make landfall around 8 am between Brahmapur and Puri in Odisha. However, there are still chances of it delaying and making landfall north of Puri. Torrential rainfall of up to 250 mm is possible on Friday within short interval giving rise to the risk of flash flooding in Odisha.

IMD forecast that the cyclone Fani will cross Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali, south of Puri on Friday forenoon with a maximum sustained wind speed of 170-180 kmph gusting to 200 kmph. After landfall, the cyclone may weaken gradually and enter West Bengal as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 90-100 kmph by Saturday early morning.

The wind speeds may drop to 70 kmph by Saturday afternoon and by Sunday afternoon, the system may move on to northeastern India dissipating into a depression or well-marked low pressure area. The moisture and heat on which the cyclone feeds over the ocean are cut-off on land and the increased friction slows the cyclone down. Therefore, the cyclones often dissipate quickly after landfall.
