FYI.. mana telugu rastarllo unna Raju lu emi kshatriyas kadu chitti..actual kshatyias ante rajputs, pujabi khatris .. vallu ... and south india lo 4 category (bapa, kshatriya, vysya, shudra) caste system ledu kuda..

Garikapati's explanation is ad hoc. He explains about reddy-karanam system, patwari system, etc. That's good. There are thorniest problems with respect to caste. British tried to classify all castes in India, and gave up.

Even in AP,  what we have at ground level  some some kulaalu, with their gohtras and gumpus. This is case with many who profess to be reddies. One can say that X, Y, Z etc belong to, say, 'pokanati' reddies, and that A, B, C belong to 'motati' reddies.  Now the question: are X, Y, Z, A, B and C reddies?   One can say, yes, because this set {X, Y, Z, A, B, C} have a 'reddy' tag in their name. But this explanation is circular, the moment you ask why they have 'reddy' tags in their names? Because they are reddies? 

It is true that some motati reddy, some pokanati reddy, in some villags V, W respectively, were munasabu-s (village magistrates/reddies). This fact alone doesn't explain the origin of either pokanatis or motatis.  Usually, people try to sell these circular explanations in the name of castes (reddy), sub-castes (motati, pedakanti, etc).

Even these reddies have short names: in Kurnool district (in old days), people add -anna; in Anantapur, -appa.  Rami Reddy becomes Ramanna, Ramappa. The only place they might have use 'reddy' tags: dastavejus (old stamp documents).  

Thanks to everyone going to school, getting certificates, degrees, we see tags everywhere.
