Leaders of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress accused by BJP’s Amit Shah of orchestrating violence during his Kolkata roadshow on Wednesday struck back at the BJP boss with what they said, was video evidence to establish the BJP’s complicity in the violence and vandalism of the bust of renowned Bengal reformer, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.

“Mr Amit Shah is a liar…. The video is the proof,” said Trinamool leader Derek O’Brien at a media briefing before heading to the Election Commission with a litany of complaints against the BJP.

This video shows some people jumping over the fence to enter the college, the lawmaker said, his rebuttal to Amit Shah who had hours earlier contended that Trinamool activists had broken the statute to be able to pin the blame on his party and gain sympathy of people.

A statue of renowned Bengal reformer, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, was destroyed and a college named after him ransacked in last evening violence, which the BJP and rival Trinamool Congress leaders have blamed on each other.

Derek O’Brien said the men who broke the statute were BJP goons who had been brought to the city from as far away as Uttar Pradesh for the roadshow.

“The streets of Kolkata tinged with shock and anger. What happened yesterday hurt Bengali pride,” he said on the vandalism, adding the TMC will take the videos it has to the poll panel and is authenticating them on record.

“We are trying to obtain and authenticate audio of slogans like ‘Vidyasagar finished, where is the Josh’ raised during the violence,” O’Brien said.

In another video that he said was being circulated via WhatsApp, people were being asked to come to Amit Shah’s roadshow with rods and arms to fight the Trinamool and police.

He brushed aside the claims and photo proof that Amit Shah had put out at his briefing a few hours earlier, calling the BJP president a conman. He also disputed Amit Shah’s charge that BJP’s posters were removed by Trinamool activists along the route of the roadshow.

Some of these posters were removed on the instructions of election officer since Amit Shah’s party only had permission for a roadshow, not posters and banners. His colleague Manish Gupta accused the BJP of putting out “communally sensitive graffiti” that continue to remain.

He also alleged that central forces in West Bengal have started a whisper campaign asking people to vote for the BJP.

The violence around the roadshow ratcheted up tensions in the battleground state, where nine seats go to polls in the last phase of the general elections on Sunday. Bengal has been roiled by violence over the past six rounds of polling, with bombs, bullets and allegations of booth capturing flying thick and fast.

The eastern state sends 42 lawmakers to Lok Sabha - the third highest after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra – which the BJP is eyeing to offset possible losses in northern India, and which are crucial for Banerjee’s national political ambitions.

Kolkata violence: TMC gives video proof to counter BJP's claims, calls Amit Shah a liar

TMC MP Derek O'Brien released videos to claim "BJP goons" damaged statue of polymath Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. He called BJP chief Amit Shah a liar for presenting 'false' evidence on the violence that took place in Kolkata.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Derek O'Brien said TMC will take proof to EC
  • Said Amit Shah seeks Bengali votes but does not know the state
  • Also alleged that central forces are in cahoots with the BJP

Trinamool Congress has now hit back at the BJP with video proof over violence that took place in Kolkata yesterday. TMC MP Derek O'Brien released videos to claim "BJP goons" damaged statue of polymath Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.

He said, "Streets of Kolkata are tinged with shock, anger. What happened yesterday hurt Bengali pride."

Referring to the press conference held by BJP Amit Shah where he claimed that TMC was behind the violence, Derek O'Brien said, "The man [Amit Shah] who was leading that procession yesterday has come to Delhi and tried to justify what happened."

Derek O'Brien asked the BJP chief, "What were your outsiders doing in Bengal? Who is Tajinder Bagga? Wasn’t he the same guy who was arrested when he slapped someone in Delhi?"

Amit Shah a liar: Derek O'Brien

Presenting a video where a mob, allegedly BJP workers, can be seen breaking the gates of the Vidyasagar College, Derek O'Brien said, "The video not only clearly establishes what the BJP did, but proves party chief Amit Shah is a liar."

Derek O'Brien also said that Amit Shah was seeking votes from Bengal but did not know the history of the state. "Amit Shah is a liar and a traitor. But we aren’t surprised. Seven days ago, he said Tagore was born in Bolpur. Amit Shah you want Bengali votes? And you don’t know!" the TMC MP said.

Continuing his attack on Amit Shah, Derek O'Brien added, "Two days ago, Amit Shah called Bengal kangal’ (bankrupt) and now this attack on Vidyasagar. We are sad and sorry that this has happened in our Bengal and our Kolkata."

TMC collecting evidence

Derek O'Brien added that the TMC was collecting proof that the violence seen in Kolkata on Tuesday was planned by the BJP. He said the party will present the evidence to the Election Commission.

He said that the media has authenticated videos showing that the slogans being raised during the desecration of the bust of Ishwarchand Vidyasagar were Vidyasagar shesh (finished), where is the josh?

He also showed a video of an alleged BJP worker asking everyone to come to Amit Shah’s roadshow and create a ruckus. The TMC also showed WhatsApp messages allegedly asking people to come to Amit Shah's roadshow with rods and arms to fight the TMC and police.

Central forces in cahoots with BJP

TMC also claimed that central forces were conspiring with the BJP. The Central government had deployed over 71,000 security personnel to "ensure violence-free elections" in Bengal.

Derek O'Brien alleged that Central forces in Bengal have started a whisper campaign asking people to vote for BJP. He presented pictures of a man wearing paramilitary fatigues walking with BJP leaders and sitting with Dilip Ghosh.

Amit Shah ‘lying’, says TMC MP Derek O’Brien; submits video footage to EC

A delegation of Trinamool MPs called on the Election Commission to complain against BJP workers instigating violence, raising provocative slogans and vandalising a bust of Vidyasagar in Kolkata

The day after suspected BJP workers vandalised the bust of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and attacked Vidyasagar College during Amit Shah’s Road Show in Calcutta, a Trinamool Parliamentary team comprising Derek O’Brien, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Manish Gupta, and Nadimul Haque met the Election Commission and submitted proof of BJP workers’ involvement in the desecration.

Of the several videos submitted as proof, one of them shows a group of men wearing saffron coloured T-shirts breaking open the locks on the gate, scaling walls and entering the campus of the college before breaking the bust. “All of it can be seen in the video. It is quite childish to ask who had the lock to the keys of the gate. It can be seen in the video who were breaking open the lock,” emphasised O’Brien, the TMC MP.

“We are trying to obtain and authenticate audio of slogans like ‘Vidyasagar finished, where is the Josh’ raised during the violence,” O’Brien said and alleged that all of this is to divert attention from the repolls ordered in 1,679 booths in Tripura among 1700 booths in the state. “Who is controlling Tripura? In Bengal, re-poll has been ordered only in six polling stations out of the 42,000 in the state. They know they are losing Bengal,” insists O’Brien.

Pointing towards the images of men in CRPF fatigues walking around with the BJP leader Dilip Ghosh in Medinipur O’Brien asked, “Is CRPF also in cahoots with the BJP?”

National Herald caught up with O’Brien for an exclusive interview after his press conference in Delhi. Edited excerpts of the interview:

Amit Shah said that if the Central forces were not there, his life would have been in danger?

Really! is all I have to say. We play by the rules. We have just shown you more than three videos. You decide. He is a liar.

BJP president Amit Shah has stated that the goons who vandalised the statue were TMC workers...

Amit Shah is lying. He is a con-master. Amit Shah can say what he wants, after all he is puke-worthy Shah. There is enough video footage to show that they brought all the goons from outside and they have indulged in all this violence. They have desecrated the icon of Bengal Renaissance.

In the press-conference, you mentioned that they were raising slogans ‘where is the Josh’...was it in Bengali?

No, I did not say that. What you heard was their men chanting ‘where is the Josh’. They were sloganeering ‘Vidyasagar ko khatam karo, where is the josh’. Or something like that. You have seen the videos; they were all authentic. We even showed you a video where it was shown that the guy is stating that several had landed one day before. He is a goon who had become a BJP member a few months ago in Calcutta.

There are several news reports that BJP has brought in four trains full of men for Amit Shah’s rally. Did they intend for the violence?

They can’t even fill a ground. They have violated the code of Conduct. Several drunken outsiders were indulging in violence. Did they think they could use ‘fear’ in their favour?

Several of them have been arrested; at least 45-50 have already been held. Don’t know how many trains. Whoever comes to the state must do a three-day workshop to understand the basic culture and ethos of Bengal.Maybe they should try and eat some non-vegetarian food also. When we perform Durga Pujo and Kali Puja, we eat non-vegetarian food too. Everyone in Bengal can do what they want. Calcutta is a cosmopolitan city and Bengal is a cosmopolitan state, so all this imported Shah and Modi can go. All their imported Gujarati style of doing politics is terrible.

After this election where will Amit Shah and Prime Minister Modi go? Shah will go back to Gujarat and Modi probably have to look for acting roles in Hollywood with the help of Canadian actor Akshay Kumar.

What do you think will happen in this election?

I am hopeful because it is not whether India will vote for BJP or against BJP, India will vote for ‘what is the idea of India’ and ‘what is not the idea of India’.

BJP is losing in the Hindi belt and they have been hoping to gain some seats from the East. Is that possible?

What do you mean they are losing only in the Hindi heartland? They are losing in the Southern heartland as well. So, then South is gone, North is gone. They can hope to win in Bengal, since there is no GST on hope. It’s a democracy. They can come there, fight, make a fool of themselves. But, they forgot that there is a tigress in Bengal.

Why do you think BJP has been resorting to violence?

They know they are going to lose there.
