may be during the formative years.. but Under Grad/Grad /Employment stage lo quota system is ridiculous...

Even in high school...when I was in grad school, I used to volunteer and teach at a school that had primarily African American students... They were provided with a decent education, but coming from a background like they were...even though they're smart, they don't think big, they don't think about doing engineering or computers which is so granted for us because we see people around us. What they see is single parent houses, sometimes foster families, drugs and gun violence. So I would say that if someone from that community can do something that's close to what I do, they deserve to do what I do and even better.

you are being too idealistic.. and seem to be a noble soul.. Good for you..

Somehow I can't digest the quota system either here or back home in India...

Like I said, they don't just base admissions on college scores alone. They consider a lot of things as well. If you are American Indian, you literally don't see anyone succeed and do great things around you because they are such a close knit community. That's why they have an easier way to get into schools. So if you're Native American, of course you struggled a lot more than a white American to do the same thing, whom would you choose? It's not the question of being ideal, reality is so much more than that.

It's not the question of smart brain, ofcourse a lot of people are smart, people that get into good schools as well as people that don't... Most people don't understand what privilege is. I have a functional family, both my parents are educated, even though they're not well off, they provided for us... In all real terms, I am privileged. So, if someone else from a more diverse background is doing something similar to me, without a functional family, or educated parents, she/he has struggled a lot more to do what I am doing without the privilege that I had. That's why it's a good thing, they don't just base college admissions based on one factor but a combination of multiple things... Also need to consider that in a classroom setting, the more diverse the group is, you bring in more interesting discussions towards a problem. Being smart is given, I think a lot of us are smart...just because someone is smart, they can't expect to be handed with opportunities....life is much more than that.

This is illogical. When you have smart brains you know what you are doing, you don't need someone from Bali to be in classroom because he explains how good the ocean is. Privilege is part of upbringing. There are lot of so called Privileged people ruined the reputation of their privilege. It doesn't make any sense for a college to consider your cultural background when giving an admission. Only Smart people deserves the top school not the diversity or money or their privileges. There's a reason for a top school to be at top because they bring more ideas and innovation to the table. Not their cultural differences.

Being smart will only take you so much in life. On any given day, I would pick someone who is hard-working/motivated over someone who is smart. Your cultural background determines not just who you are but your thought process, your ability to pursue a problem and how to come up with a solution... Being an engineer, I think differently than a pharmacist. So having an engineer and a pharmacist in a group would mean that they have more chance of coming up with a novel solution that a group of pharmacists or a group of engineers.

It's not necessarily true. That's why we have Patent systems, Trademarks so you can register your IDEA and people will pay if it is novel solution. In real life things are lot different, why would US want to control and be superpower? Why can't they allow diversity? Why not traditional Car companies allow EV's to share the market and cut fossil fuel? We are born in a planet where you find Iron Oar in abundance in one place and Gold in another place. So as our thinking. If we all call Earth as home why do we have boundaries?

Do you really think? They allowed diversity just for the diversity sake? They put the real brains way before anyone else so bringing young and educated will help support their elderly aging out. All of us paid unnecessary social and medicare which we may not know if we get benefit out of it to pay their current population. It is more than your happy thinking.

The College Board is adding an adversity score to the SAT, which will only be visible to colleges reviewing applications, according to the WSJ report. The score is meant to capture the social and economic background of the test taker. Debates have ensued.

Good idea I always feel meritocracy encourages indirect discrimination .... especially when you go looking for a job, there is rampant diiscrimination just because you had an average background irrespective of abilities and skills.
