What if all I see at home is a drug addicted mom, stepdad that rapes me and a guy that bullies me in school...am I still going to Google going to Boston and applying to MIT? Believe it or not, it happens more often than you think.

Are you expecting every single kid out there want to go to MIT? That's why I keep telling you to come out of your happy path. We are only talking about how college admission is being picked regardless of cultural or so called privileged status of a kid. Why do I or a college care about anyone's personal diaspora, when you outgrow these then you are admitted.

I don't disagree. But assuming that affirmative action doesn't mean anything in terms of college admissions is not necessarily the right thing, especially when you are talking about admitting under-privileged kids. There is a difference between a kid who does what she is supposed to do to please her parents and a kid who fights against her whole world to do what she is doing. If you want to call the later one "less smart", so be it. It doesn't mean that she is less capable than the former one...so if you give a preference to the later kid during admissions, you are not wrong. That's why cultural upbringing matters.

You are again going back, we are talking who to call winner when they are at finish line. Why are you worried about those who are far from finish line? There is lot of inequality on entire planet, can we fix it? Or is it nearly possible? Why not Warren Buffer donate to Poor? Why not Ambani donate to those in need? Does it make any sense to even discuss those?

Like I said, if we go back to the case of two girls in this situation... If there was only one seat, and there are two kids, one scored 1300 and is from a single family home and is struggling to stay afloat and the other got a 1350 and is from a functional family that encourages her. Does the 50 points in the test really matter when you take into account all the struggles that the first girl faced? Who is more motivated to prove herself to the world? Who deserves a chance?

So we override the rule and promote the 1300 kid? If you tell same story and reverse will you give same sympathy? Hell No, you will say she deserved.

Tell me the story in reverse. I don't follow. You mean a poor white kid and a rich black kid? That's why you take the whole application into consideration, not just the race.
