Being gay or lesbian doesn't have anything to do with reproduction (which is what drives evolution) but rather sexual attraction. Besides, being gay/lesbian is not something that's new... it has been happening for a long long time, just people are being more openly gay now. Cats and dogs can be gay as well, not just humans.

Having said that, I don't know if there is sexual attraction between cross species sex or if it's merely curiosity, lack of partners like you said. But cross-species sex can change evolution because they result in offsprings, unlike being sexually attracted to someone.
