German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron have reached an impasse over candidates to replace Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who is arguably the most visible figure in the EU, and the chief of the European Central Bank. The negotiations are happening in the wake of EU elections, which led to disappointing results for the traditional conservative bloc that includes Merkel and Macron.
