pliagarism is just one of his vices. he sustains the toxic culture that exists in such research institutions in India.

he's also a hypocrite, in that he laments the kind of incremantal research Indian students indulge in, while he himself became famous by publishing such incremental research

for all those papers he published (obviously mostly published by his students), did he create any breakthrough in his field?

I think of it as, sustains despite the toxic culture. Incremental research isn't that bad. A lot of people across the globe do this, especially in materials science, which is what he specializes in. If he had been in the US, he would be a famous Prof not necessarily receive as much recognition as he did. Creating a breakthrough is much harder than you think... Everyone wants to do that, don't they? It is always easier to criticize someone that do what they're supposed to do. He did some significant work with graphene nanostructures and nanoelectronics. Will he win the next Nobel prize? I don't know.

I like this story, but giving away his research for the greater good is still doing something worthwhile. I am not even talking about recognition of the work done here. I am talking about being referred by your name. Is it really that much to ask for?

no

If incremental research isn't bad, then why is he talking against such research when he indulges in it?

he's the toxic culture, or a significant part of it, especially being a political hack that abuses his students. He once listed papers published outside of his institute, as published by his institute. People would go to jail for that in the US, or be stripped off their medals.

dude, you are getting ahead of yourself. CNR rao is a good PR guy. his work iin nanochemistry is mostly on structural chemistry of metal oxides. for eg. his so called  ground breaking work on synthesizing two dimnesional oxides is only complementary to work done by many others for decades, and he's in no way a 'leading' figure in the field, other than for some Indian magazines.

Nobel prizes in the sciences haven't yet become political. lets hope it stays that way.

anyway, you say you had lunch with the guy. I won't irritate you further. I have too many friends in IISc and IIT, and we regular talk about these stuff.

also it wasn't just one instance of pliagiarism, there are atleast 3 known instances.

CNR Rao is representative of the problem in Science. today. which is, publish fast, publish more, cite each other and claim yourself as a leading scientist.

I don't know much about the guy frankly man, I actually had breakfast with him. He seemed nice, I don't know what else he has done. I agree with what you said though. He wouldn't have been as famous had he been in the US.

I agree, it's partly the reason I moved out from engineering to medicine. It takes longer to publish and you only publish significant research in medicine.

Indian science is a joke.

couple yrs there was an RSS science Sangham or something, which put forth an agenda to groom 'nationalistic minded scientists'. and it was attended by professors in top institutes.

the kind that conflate Yoga with neuroscience by misrepresenting data,  I think this one was working with the srisri boi. I get confused.

if CNR Rao is a big shot, Indian semiconductor field would be buzzing with startups (not the chip design kind)

I keep telling myself the same thing when I feel guilty about not being in India.
