It is going to be a long drive from the bay area. Solid 4 hours drive. Cars get backed up for an hour near the entrance to the park.  That's something you need to worry about with your kid. There is a 6 miles road section where you are recommended to turn off AC in summer, if you are driving from the bay area. That's just before Groveland, CA. 

Even if you are driving from Fresno, it is solid 3 hours. Are you willing to drive 4 hours each way on a single day?
