Rushabhi Posted June 9, 2019 Report Posted June 9, 2019 ' Hundreds of thousands attend protest in Hong Kong over extradition bill A new bill would allow for extradition to China. At least 240,000 (and maybe as many as 1.03 million) people marched in protest. Protesters march against a new extradition law proposal on June 9, 2019 in Hong Kong. Anthony Kwan/Getty Images Hundreds of thousands of people — perhaps even more than 1 million — took to the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday to protest a government bill that would open the door to criminal extraditions to mainland China. According to organizers, a total of 1.03 million people took part in the protests; if accurate, that would mean roughly one-seventh of the total population of the autonomous city-state took to the streets. A police spokesperson told Reuters that 240,000 were present at the “peak.” Quote

BDurruti Posted June 9, 2019 Report Posted June 9, 2019 I was in HongKong during their last protest against China installing their Mayor. It was amazing. nearly 2 weeks of people helping each other with food etc, because chinese govt cut off supplies to the city. they cut off the internet too, and some random guy made a p2p chat app, that basically everyone in the city downloaded to get their internet. Ila undali protests ante there's a slight classist tinge to these protests though. having lived in hk for a long time, they look down on chinese, and feel somewhat jealous too, of their success. all hk'ers are chinese, but those who were born in hk, don't like to be reminded of that.
