Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Gurdaspur Sunny Deol may lose his seat. The actor-turned-politician has run into trouble with the Election Commission of India (ECI) for overspending in his Lok Sabha election campaign trail.

According to an India Today report, the ECI is mulling issuing a notice to Sunny Deol for overshooting the Rs 70-lakh limit of expenses for the election campaign.

Sunny Deol apparently spent Rs 86 lakh in campaigning for his election debut.

The election commission has, reportedly, been receiving complaints about the BJP MP exceeding the limit.

If found guilty, the ECI holds the right to suspend his membership to Parliament -- implying Deol would lose his seat.

The BJP had decided to field Sunny Deol from the Gurdaspur seat only days ahead of the Lok Sabha election.

Sunny Deol defeated Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar with a margin of over 80,000 votes.

The Gurdaspur seat was earlier represented by another actor-turned-politician, the late Vinod Khanna

HIGHLIGHTS

  • BJP MP Sunny Deol may have landed in trouble with the Election Commission
  • EC has received complaints that Sunny Deol spent Rs 86 lakh on his campaign
  • EC has set a limit of Rs 70 lakh on campaign expenses. Overspending may cost Sunny Deol his Lok Sabha seat

Actor-politician Sunny Deol, who won the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket, may be pulled up by the Election Commission (EC) for overspending during campaigning.

The EC is mulling over the decision to issue a notice to Sunny Deol for overshooting the Rs 70 lakh limit of expenses for election campaign. Sunny Deol has apparently spent Rs 86 lakh in campaigning for his election debut.

The poll watchdog has received complaints about Sunny Deol exceeding the expenditure limits set by them.

According to the Election Commission, crossing the expenses limits may invite strict action against such MPs.

The EC holds the rights to suspend such a candidate's membership of the Parliament for overspending and declare the runner-up candidate as the winner.

BJP fielded Sunny Deol as its candidate for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat in a major gamble just days ahead of the elections. Sunny Deol contested against Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar and defeated him with a margin of over 80,000 votes in the Congress bastion of Punjab.

The Gurdaspur seat was earlier held by another actor-politician Vinod Khanna, whose passing away required BJP to look for another face.

Dressed in jeans, white shirt and blazer, actor Sunny Deol took oath as an MP on Tuesday amid cheers and slogans like 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' from the treasury benches.

nice joke. can the election be fought under 70lakhs?

you can't just punish random people, and hope others fall in line. random people are made scapegoats, so others can escape. this is total bullshit.

if ECI is serious, it should put forward an idea to fund the election through govt money. like how newyork local election campaigns are funded by the city corporation.

actually ECI should be disbanded. I don't think there's an ECI with such overreaching powers in any other country in the world. fcuk those losers.
