A220 which was Bombardier before airbus took over the A220, was supposed to replace these MD-8X series. As bombardier was Canadian, Boeing field a case of dumping on Bombardier as Boeing did not have a production model in this category and lobbied to impose almost 300% hike in taxes as this A220 was being produced in Canada. 

Boeing actually makes more money out of MD-8X series in the name of maintenance and spares and up gradations than it would make money by selling a new aircraft and enforced non competing agreements with its partner airlines and so airlines especially American and Delta did not had a choice other than to fly MD-8x series.

I think you meant CJ series of bombardier right ??

eh? whatever you wrote is no where relevant to the topic... 

im trying to understand the boeing's hand in airlines not going for a220 or embraers but opting md's like he said
