Do Ph.D if you are passionate about the domain, and if you like to sweat in order to solve problems Do Ph.D in top tier schools, since top tier schools attract better quality students and faculty. That's why people flock to MIT, UCB, CMU, Stanford to do Ph.D in CS. You learn more from your fellow students, who are smart and hard working. Not all teaching jobs are equal. Many schools are filled with adjuncts and teaching professors. Tenure track jobs are filled with top tier talent; otherwise, you have to join University of Alaska or "Babu State University, Appalachia". Even it is tough to get a tenure job at state schools. Everyone is hiring adjuncts to teach classes. Top 50 schools hire Ph.Ds from top five or 10 schools for their tenure track spots. Publish in top tier conferences (STOC, FOCS for theory), and at least second tier tier journals and conferences. There is no "added bonus" for doing Ph.D unless you are passionate and have time. 1 Quote
