Victims of the MH17 disaster are remembered five years after the crash

On July 17, 2014, the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. Five years after the crash, BBC News foreign correspondent Anna Holligan gave a thoughtful breakdown of the crash and the memorial in the Netherlands.

Names of 298 dead laid out in memorial programme. Relatives have been practicing reading them out loud in preparation for service. For many it’s a day to ensure their pain remains in collective consciousness

Of the 298 people on board, 196 were Dutch. Almost everyone in NL knows someone with a personal connection to one of the dead.

Silene had her son and his girlfriend’s names tattooed. In Daisy’s handwriting. Ink infused with their ashes. “Whenever I miss them I hold it to my heart...”
