Frankly, Akhilesh did not prove himself but better than Lokesh. Akhilesh was riding high on misfortunes of BSP and Mayawati and Mulayam appeared to be a better alternative and once the election results were out, Akhilesh gathered support, of course, supported by Mulayam as part of son rise concept. When the actual test began, SP+Congress coalition, UP ki Ladke ani campaign, Akhilesh was constantly warned by Mulayam not to get into alliance with Congress were not cared by Akhilesh and the result is visible.
