Establishment of i$lam was a political movement rather than a religious movement. There was only one Abrahamic religion and different ethnic groups followed it. The people from the fertile regions obviously dominated others. Christianity was a result of such domination as well. After several centuries it was turn for the guys from the desert region to break the shackles and establish a religion of their own. This time with more illogical and barbaric approach towards spirituality. The concept of One God, Haram-Halal, Heaven & Hell are few of main agendas of this "modern" religion. The isolated tribes of the Arabian peninsula now had power in their own hands. When your religious scripture says it is ok to kill anyone in the name of God, it is obvious that the world can be painted in color of your choice. Add to it the presence of oil, the religion can exert it's domination in the world. Also, the Arabian peninsula being amidst the silk route helped spread the ideology. To conclude, Muhammad would've never imagined the scale of destruction he scripted. To him it was just a social experiment.
