Sydney : Wiley Park train station assaults of three women 'crimes of opportunity', police say

A woman who had stopped to tie her shoelace after getting off a Sydney train has been indecently assaulted by a man believed to be responsible for two other similar attacks.

Two of the victims were allegedly grabbed between the legs, and one on the breast, in the attacks, which occurred over the space of five days last month near Wiley Park station in Sydney's south west.

The first of the alleged attacks took place at Shadforth St about 6.20pm on July 10.

On July 15, a woman was indecently assaulted by a man about 6.10pm at the intersection of Stanlea and Wiley Lane in Wiley Park on July 15.

The same man is thought to have struck again five minutes later, with a woman indecently assaulted outside Cornelia Street, Wiley Park.

Police on Thursday released CCTV vision and images of a man they believe can assist their inquiries.

Described as being of Indian sub-continental appearance, he is pictured with short dark hair, and wearing a black sweatshirt, grey sweatpants and dark 'slide' shoes.

"Some of the images that we have released today show that, after the first attack on the 10th of July, the man who we wish to speak to got on a train at Wiley Park Railway station and went to Lakemba Railway Station," Detective Chief Inspector Paul Albury told reporters on Thursday.

Crimes of opportunity

Inspector Albury described the attacks as "frightening and disgusting" and said they appeared to be crimes of opportunity.

"One was an opportunistic attack, where a young woman was tying her shoelaces when she was indecently assaulted," he said.

Another of the women was approached from behind, while he tried to engage the third victim in conversation.

"The timing of these attacks, aside from the alarming nature of the assaults themselves, causes us great concern," he said.

"We are looking for the public's assistance to solve this matter very quickly."
