The UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed that the area that the wildfire smoke covers totals "more than 5 million km²" (over 1.2 billion acres or 500 million hectares), which is more than the size of the European Union at "about 4.5 million km²" (over 1.1 billion acres or 450 million hectares). Wildfires have been raging throughout much of Russia's Siberian region for the past three months.
