The news story about a Saudi man buying two huge aeroplanes for his son as a birthday gift was in fact a piece of satire and had been first shared on an aviation-centric satirical website.

A story about a Saudi man who expected a scale model version of the Airbus aircraft ending up buying two huge Airbus aeroplanes went viral across the Internet in no time at all since Monday. It turns out that the incident or anything close to that never happened. The news story was in fact a piece of satire and had been first shared on an aviation-centric satirical website.

The viral story of a Saudi Arabian man buying two Airbus planes for € 329 million (Rs 2,600 crores) is false. The story first surfaced on the satirical website Thin Air Today and was then picked up by another website later in the day. It claimed that the man paid an exorbitant amount of money on two Airbus planes, which he later gifted to his son for his birthday.

The story satirically stated that a man ordered two planes over the phone and they were delivered to him a month later. It also shared a quote from a conversation between the man and an Airbus employee.

A quick online search revealed the website actually writes only satire stories around current happenings in the world of aviation. They have multiple stories on airports, manufacturers and airline operators.

Corrigendum: This is an updated version of the story. The original story published on August 27, 2019, claimed that a man from Saudi Arabia spent Rs 2,600 cr in buying two Airbus planes for his son. This is not true as the story was a gag piece that was published in an aviation-centric satirical website.
