you have grossly misunderstood the context, it is being done on the periphery walls or pillars  such that these carvings/sculpting are more like free style contemporary forms to denote the time when the temple was built in as in old days. Every temple has some form of murals to denote the time when the temple was built in like maharaja/dynasties/coins/famous peope/poetry/scripture  etc otherwise there is no way for us to know when those 1000-2000 year old temples were built. The continued the same tradition in this case.

The whole controversy could have been avoided if they have kept it to neutral subjects..basically over exuberance or swamy bhakti chupiyyaniki try chesinaru. I don’t think there is any ill intent behind this but backfired in a big way
