The lakhs of people that turned up to say farewell to Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, and the crores of people that mourned while staring without blinking at the television set, the voluntary giving up of entertainment, the raw emotions over the last two days all point to one thing: In his death, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy had rivalled N.T. Rama Rao in popularity and stature.

If NTR was the benchmark to define a popular leader, YSR crossed it and set his own level. Indeed NTR had himself remarked once that after him, it was only YSR who had the charisma in the state.

There are many similarities between the two leaders. Both believed in serving the poor and extended populist schemes even if it drained the state exchequer. In different styles, both exhibited their "aham brahmasmi (I am the be-all and-end-all)" attitude.

For YSR, it was a tough battle. NTR began his political life from a high pedestal provided by cine glamour, YSR built his path to success brick by brick. NTR was the master of his own regional party but YSR was answerable to, and at the mercy of, the party high command.

But YSR grew so tall that he became the only regional leader allowed by the high command to run an individual-centric show built around himself, indeed like the satrap of a regional party.

NTR gave a new direction to state politics not just with his passion to bring cheer into the lives of the poor but by establishing, perhaps for the first time, an effective delivery mechanism to translate government promises into a reality.

What places YSR a cut above NTR was his saturation concept and farmer-centric governance. The benefits of government programmes usually reach the cadre of the ruling party. YSR made every benefit available for every poor person in the state, including opposition activists.

In the process, some ineligible persons must have knocked off the benefits but with all conviction one could say that the eligible were not denied of them.

In sheer breadth of vision, YSR easily outdid NTR. If he built dams, it was for Rs 80,000 crore. when he gave power, it was for free. All needy students in the state could access fee reimbursement. For the Telugu adapadachu, it was interest on loans at 3%, something that would cover many other sectors later.

Two other contribution of YSR, which resulted in people establishing an immediate and emotional bond with him, were the landmark Arogyasri, health insurance to the poor, and the 108 ambulance service. YSR also gave freely from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

The first term of YSR saw launching of schemes for different sections amid a valley of allegations of corruption. After retaining power, he showed signs of correction, be it in the administration or within himself. But fate did not give him the time to prove that he was a statesman.
