talk to the kid in telugu, and the kid will pick up very slowly.. it'll take a few years for his brain to make sense of it, and structure complex sentences and it'll manifest once he spends extended time with telugu people.

I know a kid that picked up Italian and English, her dad always speaks to her in Italian, and her mom always speaks to her in English.

picking up is different from speaking it like close to native speaker. my kids talk telugu too, but stutter. they are fluent in tamil and english. tamil because they grew up in chennai. englis because they live in english speaking country now.
