Socialism vs capitalism, which is best for India ??

Economic/social experts please give your valuable opinion. If India has been more inclined to open market instead of closer to Soviet policies in 70’ s and 80’s would it been any different ?? 
Does socialism is not an effective way in reality??

Before this comparison we should compare another one first , i.e development vs well fare....

capitalism is kind of development and socialism is kind of welfare...
