According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck northwest of Lucea, Jamaica, and was also felt in Cuba and southern Florida. A magnitude 6.1 aftershock was later recorded, striking southeast of the Cayman Islands.
