The coronavirus highlighted deep structural flaws and incompetence in the Chinese regime The National Security Council, which advises the US President on national security and foreign policy matters, further blasted the Chinese regime for punishing doctors and journalists, causing Chinese and international experts to miss critical opportunities to prevent a global pandemic. The statement from the NSC comes after the Chinese Communist Party decided to expel journalists from China and Hong Kong. “This is yet another step toward depriving the Chinese people and the world of access to true information about China,” the NSC said urged China’s leaders to refocus their efforts from expelling journalists and spreading disinformation to joining all nations in stopping the Wuhan coronavirus. Wuhan’s patient zero According to a report by the Washington Post, Wei Guixian, a seafood merchant in this city’s Hua’nan market, was the first patient who contracted coronavirus. It all started on December 10 when Guixian started feeling sick and thinking that she had flue visited a local clinic to get some treatment. Just eight days later, the 57-year-old was admitted in a hospital becoming one of the first suspected cases in a coronavirus epidemic that not only paralyzed the Communist country but the whole world. Crackdown on whistleblowers Li Wenliang, the Chinese whistleblower doctor who worked for Wuhan Central Hospital had first warned of a potential “SARS-like” disease in December 2019. According to Global Times, on December 30, he obtained a patient report suggesting SARS-like coronavirus positive signs after which he shared the information in a group chat saying that there have been seven confirmed cases of "SARS,". After his posts on Weibo went viral, the local police interrogated and reprimanded him for spreading "online rumours". He was further forced to sign a letter of reprimand. The doctor, who became an online hero in China, died of coronavirus in February. Controlling the narrative China’s internet police aka the digital army has been trying hard to push the narrative that the US was behind the COVID-19 pandemic. It started when Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian shared a conspiracy website article alleging that the US army may have brought the deadly coronavirus into China. This outrageous allegation raised many eyebrows and the US strongly condemned it summoning the Chinese ambassador to lodge its protest. Ever since the outbreak, Chinese internet police activity has only increased with multiple arrests in mainland China of people who had shared their side of the story on social media websites. 1 Quote
