Mogalthur (West Godavari dist), Jan 31 (TNN): The sleepy village of Mogalthur, the home turf of Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) president Chiranjeevi, in West Godavari district in Coastal Andhra Pradesh was abuzz with activity on Saturday as the Chief Minister, Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, conducted a road show here as part of his ongoing tour of the district.

Addressing a whistle-stop meeting in this village, the Chief Minister almost spewed venom at Chiranjeevi for “completely neglecting” his (Chiranjeevi’s) birth place of Mogalthur. The villagers responded in thunderous applause when the Chief Minister, in an oblique reference to Chiranjeevi, said that a person who has amassed huge wealth, in crores, by pursuing his career in films has not spent even a single rupee for the development of his own village.

The Congress flags fluttered along the route Chief Minister’s convoy travelled in the village and the huge crowd gathered to listen to Dr Reddy also were seen holding the party flags, sometime flashing at the Chief Minister to attract his attention. Slogans like “YSR Zindabad, Congress Zindabad” rented the air which encouraged Dr Reddy to extend his speech beyond schedule.

Dr Reddy said that the Congress has the support of the people while the other parties are struggling to get the support of their own cadre. Even if Grand Alliances and Mega Alliances coming into existence, it is only the Congress that will storm back to power relegating these combines to second and third positions, he observed.

“The Congress Government is working with commitment and dedication to improve the living conditions of the people of the State. I do not know twirl of moustache nor I know bagging my thighs. The only thing that I know is serving the people of the State,” he added.

Listing out the welfare schemes that his Government has launched like supply of Rs 2-a-kg rice and edible oil and sanction of old-age pensions and building of Indiramma houses, the Chief Minister showered promise on the villagers. “The local college with be taken over by the government and funds will be sanctioned for the construction of roads in the village,” he said.

Dr Reddy did not spare the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president and former chief minister, Mr N Chandrababu Naidu. “Mr Naidu who enjoyed power for nine years has not taken up any scheme that is useful for the common man. Throughout the nine years in power, Mr Naidu only spent his time to make money,” Dr Reddy alleged.
