LONDON--British Airways reached agreements with unions to furlough more than 30,000 cabin crew and ground staff as it cuts back operations in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The measures taken by BA, owned by International Consolidated Airlines Group SA, will run until May 31. Employees will receive 80% of their salaries as part of a U.K. government plan recently put in place to prevent companies from letting staff go. The airline’s 4,000 pilots have separately agreed to take four weeks of unpaid leave over April and May. In total, the carrier employs about 40,000 people.

Contact center and customer support teams won’t be affected by the cuts, and the carrier is keeping on crew to continue operating a handful of daily long- and short-haul flights from London’s Heathrow Airport.

Ross Stores Inc. ROST, -6.69% said Thursday that it will furlough most of its store and distribution center associates starting April 5. Ross Dress for Less and DD's Discount locations have been closed since March 20 and had expected to reopen on April 4. Stores will now be closed indefinitely. Board Chairman Michael Balmuth and Chief Executive Barbara Rentler will forego their salaries with tiered salary reductions throughout the company. Ross Stores stock is up 1.1% in premarket trading but down 13.5% over the last year. The S&P 500 index SPX, 0.034% has tumbled nearly 14% for the past 12 months.

Walt Disney Co. will start the process of putting some employees on furlough status as of April 19 given that there is “no clear indication” when its theme parks and related businesses will be able to reopen because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Disney said in a statement that furloughed employees will still retain their full healthcare benefits during the furlough period, with all premiums paid by the company.

 Caesars employs 64,000 throughout the organization, according to its 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
