Rwanda discovers 'significant' mass grave nearly 26 years after genocide

According to an AP report, authorities in the East African country have exhumed 50 of possibly 30,000 bodies from the 1994 Rwandan genocide in a valley dam outside the country's capital of Kigali. April 7 will mark 26 years since an estimated 800,000 people were killed by ethnic Hutu extremists.

During the conflict, Hutu extremists released hundreds of patients suffering from AIDS from hospitals, and formed them into "rape squads". The intent was to infect and cause a "slow, inexorable death" for their future Tutsi rape victims.^[190] Tutsi women were also targeted with the intent of destroying their reproductive capabilities. Sexual mutilation sometimes occurred after the rape and included mutilation of the ** with machetes, knives, sharpened sticks, boiling water, and acid.^[9] Men were also the victims of sexual violation,^[187] including public mutilation of the genitals.^[187]

Some experts have estimated that between 250,000 and 500,000 women were raped during the genocide.^[9]
