Long write up, but single line lo cheppadam kastam , s0rry about that. This is from a Buddhist point of view. Also applies to general people 1. Buddhism believes in understanding themselves in a deep and transforming way. Basically, during meditation, it expects you to read yourself, observe your mind, thoughts, body. That way you become an observer of self and the world. This is the first step in transformation. 2. I mentioned before, meditation is not something new in buddhism, it is drawn from hinduism. A brahman(not the caste, the highest form of a being according to the scripts)is a person who fully knows "Atman"- real self. This can be achieved through mindfulness. If you claim to be a true brahman...you need to know the atman~this was explained in a simpler way in buddhism. 3. Nirvana- enlightenment is possible when you can liberate yourself from suffering. The main cause of sufferings are desires. After all, desires lead to greed, lust and the atrocities that follow. These desires can be curbed by concentrating on yourself. 4. Meditation is NOT prayer. Prayer is petition. You are asking God for something...some boon, which is again a desire . Instead, it is a guided transformation -you can do that with the help of a teacher, who guides you on "how to meditate" or through self...where your mind and body are the teachers.
