I beleive Indian students ,some of them very old by now,and whom I know personally ,were telling me how they boarded the ship in Bombay (now Mumbai) to go to the USA back then in the 1930’s/40’s and possibly early 50’s,)) to pursue their higher education .Perhaps the ship did stop in Southampton or Bristol in England before resuming its journey to New York.Another old lady student who also studied in USA ,told me that the college initiation was also done on Board ship so that students were already familiar with the curiculam before they reached college in the USA.These days Ofcourse such a journey would be considered very arduos and Jet planes have taken over the task of transporting holiday makers,businessmen ,newly enrolled students and tourists in under a day to the USA.Ships I beleive took a little under a months time to reach America.

Passenger ships are almost none in operation from India to other countries.

On the other hand, If your choice also includes Container (aka commercial ships) you can provided you can pay a huge sum of money mostly in dollars to travel.

But once in a while private cruise liners have a package deal for which you may have to reach a sea port in India namely Bombay, Goa, kochi on the west coast and Chennai, Vishakaptnam and Calcutta on the Bay of Bengal including the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

You may have to travel to those ports with approved Visa documentation to country of your interest to travel along with valid Boarding pass to travel by ship.

So far there are ships which take you to Lakshadweep on west coast (Arabian Sea) & Andaman Nicobar Islands on the east coast (Bay of Bengal).
