Delta Air to retire all of its 777 jets, in latest blow to Boeing

Delta Air Lines Inc. plans to retire its 777 jumbo jets made by Boeing Co. and replace them with Airbus SE aircraft in another hit for the beleaguered U.S. plane maker.

Delta’s 18 Boeing 777s will end service by the end of the year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the airline said Thursday.

“The retirement will accelerate the airline’s strategy to simplify and modernize its fleet, while continuing to operate newer, more cost-efficient aircraft,” Delta DAL, -2.26% said.

Delta will continue flying its fleet of long-haul, next-generation Airbus AIR, +0.51% A350-900s, which burn 21% less fuel per seat than the 777s they will replace, the airline said.

Boeing BA, -1.75% did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The plane maker, still reeling from the worldwide grounding of its 737 Max aircraft, has struggled amid the pandemic as travel ground to a halt and its airline customers delay or forgo plane orders.

Boeing launched its 777 program in 1990, with the first deliveries being made in the mid-1990s.

Delta was one of a few airlines to work with Boeing to develop the twin-jet, wide-body aircraft, which cleared new possibilities for non-stop, long-haul flights. Delta flew the planes from Atlanta to Johannesburg, from Los Angeles to Sydney, and other distant destinations.

The airline last month announced plans to accelerate the retirement of the MD-88 and MD-90 fleets to June.

 

Like its peers around the world, Delta has responded to the economic devastation caused by the coronavirus by cutting capacity and costs, furloughing employees, and parking aircraft and considering early aircraft retirements to reduce its operational complexity and cost.

Delta said Thursday it has parked more than 650 mainline and regional aircraft to match the decimated demand.

Despite the reduction in international passenger air travel, Delta’s 777 fleet had been busy.

Since late April, the “workhorse” plane “has flown dozens of trips from Chicago and Los Angeles to Frankfurt to deliver mail to U.S. military troops abroad; operated between the U.S. and Asia to deliver thousands of pounds of critical, life-saving supplies to aid in the COVID-19 response; and carried thousands of U.S. citizens back to the U.S. from Sydney, Mumbai, Manila and other cities around the world,” the company said.

Delta said more details on the timing of the 777’s exit from the fleet will be disclosed at a later date.

The airline and other U.S. peers are receiving a government bailout. The recovery for airlines is expected to be slow, and in recent trading sessions airline stocks, including Delta’s, hit new lows.

So far this year, Delta shares have lost 68%, and Boeing shares are down 64%. That compares with losses of 13% and 19% for the S&P 500 index SPX, 0.18% and the Dow Jones Industrial DJIA, 0.61% in the same period.

A350s are the way forward... atleast until 777x comes into market and clicks as good as 777

350 is a newer aeroplane compared to 777 or even 787... obviously a lot more new technology and above everything extremely fuel efficient... all the neo options and then a350 are bumper hits for airbus... next 777x vastundi and its believed to be very fuel efficient too ... so we will know more in the next 2 yrs or so

In long range twin aisle airvraft series, A350 is the baap...LIterally baap..! Much better than the 777's.

Almost 20% fuel savings, 35% lesser weight and much durable, easy on maintenance, with 10% more range and fuel carrying capacity, 10% more cargo, almost 50 million chepaer..

The plus point with 777 is that it cans eat upto 400 in single config and almosr 300 in 2 config where as A350 can seat upto 250-270

Airlines are now looking for planes like 787/350 as these configurations proved to be more profitable than 777's or 380's as airlines struggle to fill in 400 people where as its bit easier to find 300 odd passengers  in a fuel saving aircraft like A350

I didnt know 350s have longer range than 777... I thought 777LR is the world's longest range planes

Its not too much but they fly another 1000 miles more than 777..Actually we shouldnt compare 350 to 777's..not appropriate. 787 and 350 sit in the same class.

777 is much heavier and has more seats than 350.

Singapore-JFK, SIngapore-LAX, Doha-Syd/Melbourne/NZ anni 350's ae using..

350 - 787

330 and 777 have no counterparts for each other

319, 320, 321 - 737

I think this is the comparison

777 ki A340 unde competitor gaa

kaani 777 won coz of fuel efficiency and ease of maintenance as A340 was 4 engined plane

yeah right forgot about A340..... it can be definitely called as 777s counterpart but no way close in comparison to the number flying or efficnency or anything else..

inka same size or level kakapoina 777 ki comparison should be 330

Yeah ipudu vunna models lo aithe 777 ki comparision aithe A330 ae...they are now coming up with NEO series and its more or less will have similar seating capacity and range as much as 777....but will never be able to challenge 777's place. 

if not for emirates, it would not have been easier for Boeing to sell 777x's. Ippatiki they are plan to be reduce their 777x's to favour a350 XWB's and A330's. If that finalizes, then Boeing would loose 777's most valuable customer.

think about it... ipudu neo option unte dont you think airlines will pick a330 neo over 777s? I think 350 and 330 neo could push 777 from its top place.. atleast until 777x is ready

Yeah emirates odu solid jhatka ichadu for boeing by jumping the airbus wagon
