Amazon's stock surges toward 2nd-straight record close after BofA boosts price target to $3,000

Shares of Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, 3.13% hiked up 1.1% toward a record close, in the face of a broader stock market selloff, after BofA Securities analyst Justin Post boosted his price target by 15% to $3,000, citing "several data points" suggesting second-quarter results will beat current Wall Street expectations. "Since Amazon reported on 4/30, data points from BAC aggregated credit and debit card data, positive read-throughs from competing e-commerce marketplaces, and normalization of Amazon's operations suggest 2Q upside," Post wrote in a note to clients. He reiterated his buy rating and raised his price target to $3,000 from $2,600, which ties him with three other analysts for the second-highest price target for the 48 analysts surveyed by FactSet. The highest target is RBC Capital's Mark Mahaney's at $3,300. Post said data suggests overall e-commerce growth improved to 83% in May from 73% in April. He indicated that Amazon's build-out of its fulfillment network, as the company recently hired 175,000 employees, is encouraging as historically, fulfillment builds preceded acceleration in unit growth. Amazon's stock, which is on track for a second-straight record close despite a 1.0% drop in the S&P 500 SPX, -0.66%, has soared 41.8% over the past three months, while the S&P 500 has gained 16.6%.
