The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Wednesday, June 16 announced that it has released a list of more than 500 Chinese products to be boycotted. The list includes the products for which India is heavily dependent on China.

Goods including FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) products, consumer durables, toys, furnishing fabrics, builder hardware, footwear, apparel etc. The local trader's body has said that the objective to boycott the Chinese products is to reduce India's dependence on the neighbouring country.

The call for a boycott is to reduce import of Chinese finished goods by $13 billion or about Rs one lakh crore, by December 2021.

This is not an action that creates significant impact. China has ingrained itself so well in the world supply chain that it's very hard to have products without a component part of the product made in china or sourced from china. We need to build our own capabilities within the country until then this is not going to be so useful.

CAIT appeals to celebrities to stop endorsing Chinese products

PTI18 June 2020, 6:24 am GMT-6

New Delhi, Jun 18 (PTI) Traders' body CAIT on Thursday appealed to celebrities to stop endorsing products of Chinese brands as a mark of respect for Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in the Galwan Valley attack in Ladakh.

In an open letter, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has appealed Aamir Khan, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Virat Kohli and others to stop endorsing Chinese products.

It has also invited Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty, Madhuri Dixit, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar and others to join the campaign to boycott Chinese products under its flagship national movement 'Bharatiya Saaman-Hamara Abhiman'.

The Indian cricket board and cricketers are largely an apolitical bunch, so keeping mum on the Galwan valley conflict is hardly notable. But this doesn’t mean they have been untouched by the anti-China mood sweeping the nation.

While condolences have been duly offered on the loss of jawans’ lives, the cricket body is especially worried that a Chinese company is the title sponsor of the IPL.

Of course, any comment against Chinese companies would land them in contractual trouble, but that isn’t all. They can hardly afford to lose the deal and look for a replacement at the time of a global economic crisis.

Moreover, BCCI bosses Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah could well be worried as most of their sponsors are either Chinese companies or are backed by Chinese investors.
