For kid I would get any entry level laptop deal , brands don't matter but SSD is a must nowadays , 1 minute start up time reduced to 15-20 secs .

You can get  deals on staples for 400$ laptops from time to time . 

Just aim for 8GB ram , SSD , processor does not really matter since it's just for online learning .  Try to get Ultrabook since it can run cool , lightweight and long battery .
