watching Indian Food documentary(hindi - raja rasoi aur anya kahaniyaan ) and was surprised to find out that Mirchi is not native an Indian spice but was brought to India by Vaso-di-gama in 16th century, the raja’s back then distributed the seeds in their respective kingdoms and that’s how it became one of the favorite Indian spices.

Black Pepper used to be the staple before the mirchi substituted it.

Same with pickles.  It started long back in Europe, parts of italy and south west asia slowly came to india.  Mana pickling is different from their pickling.

Always makes wonder why we never ventured out of our subcontinent but everyone from outside came here from Alexander to mongols to afgans to british to Portuguese . Either we are lazy or thought there is no world beyond India.
