iphone7 Posted November 10, 2020 Report Posted November 10, 2020 Bro anyone using plex? If so are you using NAS to for storage? I’m currently using external SSD connected to my Mac and streaming from there but my 1TB got full and now I’m thinking to make it large Here are my options 1. buy 2TB SSD and use it with current MacBook 2. buy NAS and install server there - here I see that I need to upgrade ram etc so getting expensive any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks Quote
Discotek Posted November 10, 2020 Report Posted November 10, 2020 Depends on use case bro 1) how many users will be using it 2) how many parallel streams required 3) how many transcoded streams required The rule of thumb is when there are more than 5 users and 2 parallel streams at any given point of time , you have to go for dedicated PC for processing and a NAS for storage. If its mostly you that will be using plex , then you can definetly consider installing plex server on NAS itself . you dont even require to upgrade RAM I use one from synology with RAID and its fine for my needs Quote
dewarist Posted November 10, 2020 Report Posted November 10, 2020 NAS is too much of a overkill. Add additional storage to your mac , that should do. Quote

With 2GB ram? mostly it’s just me I’ll watch movies; very occasionally I’ll share it with other over internet. Parallel streams aaithe 99.99% it’s just me. I’m not sure with the transcode bro looking at the synology I thinks it’s expensive, so let’s say if I get 2GB SSD around ~250$ Samsung T7 and connect it to my Mac (assuming I’ll update my Mac every 3 years or so) will that work? Or you think that 2TB is not enough? Quote
iphone7 Posted November 10, 2020 Author Report Posted November 10, 2020 NAS aaithe entha varuku $ pettotchu? My concern is now a days all videos coming in 4K kada so if I’m building something now I want it to be future proof for 4-5 years how much storage will you use? @Discotek can I ask how much you spent on NAS? Also 2TB should be fine , but its also based on redundancy and content kada Also meeru movies mac lone chusthara where plex server is installed ? that kind of kills the purpose kada on a side note : transcode ante simply converting format of the video file before streaming it this is required because different users use different plex clients may be .. one use may install it on apple tv box and other may use their phone so plex server have to change the format ( transcode ) it to fit their screens and also for the plex client to understand it.This require lot of CPU and RAM power which traditional NAS cannot provide Quote
