IPL 2021 Mega Auction : BCCI tells franchise, final decision about Mega Auction by December

IPL 2021 Player Auctions : The Board of Cricket Control of India has communicated to the franchises that decision about the Mega-Auctions (Full fledged player auctions) will be taken by December.

In 4 months from now, the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) will have to conduct the 14th edition of the IPL. The biggest decision which BCCI has to take for IPL 2021 is whether to conduct full fledged player auctions for IPL 2021 or let the teams continue with the existing squads.

According to the sources in BCCI, the board has now informed the teams that they will be take decisions by the 2nd week of Dec on the way forward.

“Time constraints are there but the full auction will be in the interest of everyone. IPL Governing Council will formally decide on this in next 3-4 weeks and communicate to everyone concerned”, said the BCCI source.

IPL 2021 Player Auctions : Full fledged auctions only if board decides to increase number of teams in IPL 2021

It is worth noting that BCCI earlier in 2019 had indicated that board will look to increase teams before full player auctions in 2020. Will BCCI attempt to increase the number of teams for the next edition?

“Too early to discuss this”, replied the BCCI official.

Meanwhile some reports are also doing the rounds that BCCI may include 9th team in the IPL fold for the next season. InsideSport was told by the BCCI official, ‘it is too premature to talk about new editions at this stage’.

IPL 2021 Full player auctions will bring in relief for teams like Chennai Super Kings

After the IPL 2020 debacle, one team which is desperate to rebuild itself that is Chennai Super Kings. For them having full player auction will be a welcome relief. Even MS Dhoni during the post-match interview after playing the last league game of IPL 2020 stated that rebuilding the team will depend on what decision BCCI takes for the next players auction.

“We have to wait and see what BCCI decide on the next season’s player auctions”, Dhoni had said in reply to CSK’s rebuilding plans for IPL 2021.

Not only CSK, but teams like Rajasthan Royals, KingsXI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore according to a source also has indicated to the BCCI in informal discussion that they will welcome full player auctions for the next season.

InsideSport has learnt that the franchises are divided over the idea of having a mega auction for the next season. If CSK, SRH, RCB are in favor of Mega auctions, teams like Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians have settled squads and may resist the move.

IPL 2021: Mohanlal, Salman Khan in bid to buy ninth team? Speculations grow

IPL 2021 could feature nine teams in the tournament and there are reports of Mohanlal and Salman Khan interested in buying the ninth team.

The BCCI is upbeat about the prospects of IPL 2021 after the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League was held in grand style in the UAE without any mishaps amidst the coronavirus pandemic. There are reports that BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has hinted to the franchises to prepare for a mega-auction which could take place in early 2021. A couple of days ago, there was a report in The Hindu that a ninth team could be included in IPL 2021 as the BCCI looks to recover the losses that it incurred while hosting IPL 2020 in UAE. The ninth team could be based in Gujarat.

However, there are now speculations that the ninth team could have some big names bidding for it. Gautam Adani, one of the top business tycoons in the country, could be the top contender to buy this team but it has now emerged that south superstar Mohanlal and Bollywood hero Salman Khan might also be interested in bidding for the ninth team.

Mohanlal was spotted at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium as one of the VIP guests during the IPL 2020 final between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. His presence at the stadium saw social media going into a meltdown. On the other hand, Salman Khan already owns the Celebrity Cricket League apart from other ventures in Bollywood.
