I would purely put it as demand supply game

1) In our parents time, accessibility and exposure was not that much and they restricted their marriages to close circle or relatives in villages nearby. And gender ratio was not as bad as these days so demand supply was balanced.

2) Coming to these days the exposure, expectations and greed has risen gigantic proportions. The gender ratio has become bad and everyone wants the top 1% quality in both genders.

For example in movies where hero is shown with desperate beggar like acts to woo the heroine loosing all his self respect and what not has nothing to do with love. It is just a frustrated sexual desire that goes to any extent to get laid. And the competition is so high it ends up making him a street dog fighting with other dogs to get laid. These kind of folks are shown as heroes and the same gets copied by the generation.
