I do not recommend FD.

If 1.5 Lakh is not a burden for you - invest in a low expense ratio, large cap fund. Many ETFs and indexes in India are fee heavy. They are getting lower, but something very important to lookout for. make sure it is invested in an elder person's name (like parents) and the kid is the nominee after 20 years or so.

18 to 20 yrs.

So why not put in PPF account which would give you certainly better return than FD and is kept locked for 15 yrs..

You may add some amount if you wish from time to time.. This is actually can be used for Tax benefit also, matured amount also is not taxable..

As of now interest provided is 7.1%,this is kind of safe bet.

Like this aa

Index Fund Expense Ratio
Schwab U.S. Large-Cap ETF (SCHX) 0.03%
iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF (ITOT) 0.03%
iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) 0.04%
Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) 0.03%

Are these available in India?

Recovery plan Don't invest anything in india Except real estate plots in cities .

Market is at all time highs without any solid fundamentals . FD is a joke nowadays , well below inflation for almost 3 years now .

Asalu central government ki emi recovery plan ledhu , except slap import taxes on everything

Go for MF... danlo kuda Equity + Debt funds or Large Cap funds untai if you want safe bet.. you would get on avg 10% in long term...  Don't worry about market trend as it's will always be  45° incase of ind for next 15-20 yrs

Kontha mandhi bhayam market down ite  antha biscut ani..  if so, FD rate kuda down itai  in future..   and Stock Market down is a correction and not permanent.

DON'T invest in individual stock... Had bitter exp with Yesbank...
